Leading Ladies 2018: Pamela Machon

Owner & Baker, Sophie’s Brewhouse

Pamela Machon, owner of Sophie’s Brewhouse, had a lot of varied and interesting careers before opening her first coffee shop in 2008. “I’ve done it all,” Pamela says, from being a hairdresser to an excavator to a blackjack dealer at a casino, “but none of those were my passion. I love to cook and bake.” She opened Sophie’s Coffee & Cafe in Exeter, and, working with her daughters, had a successful run for seven years. “I sold the business thinking I needed a break,” Pamela explains, “but life had other plans.”

Pamela reopened Sophie’s in 2016, with a new name. Now, in addition to the coffee and pastries that Sophie’s has always served, Sophie’s Brewhouse has a full liquor license, and serves delicious breakfast and lunch sandwiches, with gluten free and vegan options. And the coffee is still great: espresso, lattes and cappuccinos with beans from Italy, plus chai and all-natural smoothies. Pamela donates to local charities, and prides herself on using as many local vendors as possible, like Rhody Fresh, Roch’s, Calise, Bagelz and Kenyon’s Grist Mill, among many others. “Being that I’m an Italian from Westerly, we serve a breakfast sandwich made with Soupy!” And the good things keep coming. Sophie’s in the process of building a bar and an outdoor patio. “We have a loyal customer base,” says Pamela. “I think it speaks volumes the way the community has welcomed us back.”
